Mit Paul Gauguin (1848 – 1903) präsentiert die Fondation Beyeler einen der berühmtesten und faszinierendsten Künstler überhaupt. Rund fünfzig Meisterwerke Gauguins aus internationalen Privatsammlungen und renommierten Museen lassen die Ausstellung zu einem der grossen europäischen Kulturhöhepunkte des Jahres 2015 werden. Gauguins zukunftsweisende Bilder wurden zu Ikonen der modernen Kunst und zählen zu den bedeutendsten Kulturschätzen der Welt. Mit ihren leuchtenden Farben und elementaren Formen revolutionierten sie die Kunst und begeistern noch heute.
Die Ausstellung zeigt sowohl Gauguins vielseitige Selbstporträts als auch die visionären und spirituellen Bilder aus seiner Zeit in der Bretagne. Vor allem stehen Gauguins weltbekannte, auf Tahiti entstandene Gemälde im Vordergrund: In idyllischen Landschaften erscheinen sinnliche Frauengestalten, oft von symbolhaften Tieren begleitet.
In ihnen feiert der Künstler seine Idealvorstellung von einer unversehrten exotischen Welt und verbindet darin Natur und Kultur, Mystik und Erotik, Traum und Wirklichkeit auf harmonischste Weise.
Neben Gemälden präsentiert die Ausstellung auch eine Auswahl rätselhafter Skulpturen Gauguins, welche die damals schon weitgehend verschwundene Kunst der Südsee lebendig werden lassen.
Gauguins einzigartige Schöpfungen erzählen von der Suche nach einem verlorenen Paradies auf Erden, von seinem filmreifen Künstlerleben zwischen den Kulturen, bestimmt von Leidenschaft und Abenteuergeist.

Offrant ainsi l’un des grands sommets culturels européens de l’année 2015, l’exposition de la Fondation Beyeler rassemble une cinquantaine de chefs-d’oeuvre de Gauguin provenant des musées et des collections particulières les plus renommés du monde. Les tableaux novateurs de Gauguin, véritables icônes de l’art moderne, comptent parmi les trésors culturels les plus marquants et les plus précieux au monde. Avec leurs couleurs éclatantes et leurs formes élémentaires,
ils ont révolutionné l’art et continuent d’enthousiasmer les spectateurs d’aujourd’hui.
L’exposition montre aussi bien les autoportraits très divers de Gauguin que les tableaux visionnaires et spirituels datant de son séjour en Bretagne.
Le parcours accorde une place prépondérante aux toiles mondialement célèbres que Gauguin a créées à Tahiti: des figures féminines sensuelles, souvent accompagnées d’animaux symboliques, sont enchâssées dans des paysages idylliques.
L’artiste y célèbre son idéal d’un monde exotique intact, liant nature et culture, mysticisme et érotisme, rêve et réalité dans une parfaite harmonie. En complément à ces peintures, l’exposition présente également une sélection d’exceptionnelles sculptures de Gauguin, qui font revivre l’art largement disparu des mers du Sud.
Les créations uniques de Gauguin parlent de la quête d’un paradis terrestre perdu, elles évoquent la vie mouvementée d’un artiste entre les cultures, déterminée par la passion et la soif d’aventure.

While featuring Gauguin’s diverse self-portraits and his visionary, spiritual paintings from the time he spent in Brittany, the exhibition focuses on the world-famous paintings he created in Tahiti. In those depictions of sensual female figures set amidst idyllic landscapes and often accompanied by emblematic animals, the artist celebrates his ideal of an unspoilt exotic world. Gauguin’s masterpieces convey an exceptional harmony between nature and culture, mysticism and eroticism, dream and reality. In addition to the paintings, the exhibition includes a selection of Gauguin’s outstanding sculptures that evoke the largely vanished art of the South Seas.
