Dopo i positivi riscontri suscitati dalle mostre consacrate a "Jean-Michel Basquiat" e a "Christo e Jeanne-Claude" il Museo d'Arte Moderna della Città di Lugano prosegue l'indagine sui linguaggi contemporanei dell'arte del XX secolo con un'ampia rassegna antologica dedicata a Miquel Barceló.

La retrospettiva ripercorre l'avvincente carriera dell'enfant prodige della pittura spagnola ed europea attraverso la presentazione di oltre ottanta opere, dipinti di assoluta intensità e sculture di rara forza espressiva, con l'obiettivo di rivelare il carattere straordinario della poetica di Barceló tra adesione alla natura e visionarietà.

Il nucleo dell'esposizione, curata da Rudy Chiappini, è costituito da oltre cinquanta dipinti realizzati a partire dai primi anni ottanta e caratterizzati da tematiche autobiografiche e da uno stile figurativo, fino alla produzione più recente improntata ad una pittura più essenziale nella rappresentazione ma fortemente materica nell'utilizzo dei pigmenti.

L'allestimento, seguendo un percorso cronologico e sottolineando alcune tematiche predilette dall'artista, contribuisce ad illustrare le principali tappe della ricerca di Barceló: dalle origini neoespressioniste con tele quali Map de carn (1982), a soggetti legati più alla figura dell'artista come in Giorgione à Felanitx (1984); dalla serie delle biblioteche come Furnish Dreams (1984) ai bodegones, nature morte che includono attrezzi da cucina e vari commestibili come in Fum de cuina (1984) in cui è percettibile il riferimento alla pittura classica del diciassettesimo secolo; dalle tradizionali corride esemplarmente rappresentate ne La cuadrilla (1990), alle più tragiche crocifissioni, Somalia 92 (1992), fino alle opere di fresca data consacrate ai fondali marini, Sourire de la mer (2002). Il terzo piano è dedicato alla produzione su carta e scultorea: una trentina fra gouaches, disegni e bronzi che completano la visione proposta ai piani precedenti.

La mostra ideata in stretta collaborazione con l'artista, gode del sostegno di alcuni prestigiosi musei internazionali tra i quali il Musée National d'Art Moderne Centre Georges Pompidou di Parigi, il capcMusée d'art contemporain di Bordeaux, Les Abattoirs di Tolosa, la Fundación "la Caixa" di Barcellona, il MACBA - Museu d'Art Contemporani di Barcellona, la Fundación Almine y Bernard Ruiz-Picasso para el Arte, la "Sa Nostra" Caixa de Balears e il Pelaires Centre Cultural Contemporani di Palma di Maiorca. Ricca inoltre la partecipazione di importanti gallerie e collezioni private grazie alle quali è possibile ammirare una serie di opere scelte che fanno di questa mostra, la prima organizzata da un museo svizzero, uno degli omaggi più importanti dedicati all'artista a livello internazionale.

Miquel Barceló nasce a Felanitx, sull'isola di Maiorca, nel 1957. Frequenta la Escuela de Bellas Artes y Oficios a Palma di Maiorca dove apprende le tecniche di disegno e modellatura e la Escola Superior de Belas Artes de Sant Jordi a Barcellona. A soli diciannove anni tiene la sua prima personale in forma ufficiale al Museo di Palma di Maiorca nella quale propone al visitatore una riflessione sul tema della metamorfosi, un argomento di primaria importanza nella produzione di Barceló. Nel 1982 è l'unico artista spagnolo ad essere invitato all'edizione di Documenta 7 a Kassel grazie alla quale gli si aprono, a soli venticinque anni, le porte del firmamento dell'arte internazionale. Grande esploratore, Barceló si reca per la prima volta in Africa nel 1988. Il paesaggio maliano caratterizzato da ampie pianure, aree depressionarie, formazioni rocciose e i miraggi del deserto diventano temi ricorrenti nell'opera di Barceló che divide il suo tempo fra Parigi, Maiorca e il Mali. Le forze e le energie di Barceló sono rivolte oggi alla realizzazione dell'imponente decorazione in terracotta della cappella di Sant Pere nella cattedrale la Seu di Palma di Maiorca, significativo esempio della cultura artistica spagnola.

After the positive reactions following the exhibitions of "Jean-Michel Basquiat" and "Christo and Jeanne-Claude", the Museum of Modern Art of the City of Lugano is continuing its comparative search into the contemporary expressions of 20th century art with a wide anthological review presenting the artistic output of Miquel Barceló.

The retrospective spans the fascinating career of the enfant prodige of Spanish and European painting through the presentation of more than eighty works, paintings of absolute intensity and sculptures of rare expressive force, and provides a complete overview revealing the extraordinary character of the poetic spirit of Barceló between his devotion to nature and his visionary approach.

The exhibition, curated by Rudy Chiappini, presents, on the first two floors, more than fifty paintings, produced as from the early eighties and characterised by autobiographical subjects and a figurative style, up to the more recent works dictated by a more essentially representative technique which is, however, strongly material in the use of pigments. The layout, with a chronological sequence helps to highlight the main stages in Barceló's art from the neoexpressionist origins with canvasses such as Map de carn (1982), to subjects relating more to the figure of the artist in Giorgione à Felanitx (1984); from the libraries series in Furnish Dreams (1984) to the bodegones, still life including kitchen implements and various foods as in Fum de cuina (1984) in which can be seen the reference to the classic painting of the seventeenth century; from the traditional bullfights represented in exemplary style in La cuadrilla (1990), to the most tragic crucifixion, Somalia 92 (1992), up to the most recent works devoted to the seabed, Sourire de la mer (2002). The third floor presents his works on paper and sculptures. There are about thirty items comprising gouaches, drawings and bronzes that complete the impression gained on the lower floors.

The exhibition, devised in close co-operation with the artist, is being supported by some prestigious international museums including the Musée National d'Art Moderne Centre Georges Pompidou of Paris, the capcMusée d'art contemporain of Bordeaux, Les Abattoirs of Toulouse, the MACBA - Museu d'Art Contemporani of Barcelona, the Fundación Almine y Bernard Ruiz-Picasso para el Arte and the Pelaires Centre Cultural Contemporani of Palma de Majorca. There are also a wealth of participating private galleries and collections thanks to which it is possible to view a series of chosen works that make of this exhibition one of the most important tributes dedicated to the artist and the first to be held in Switzerland.
Miquel Barceló was born in Felanitx, on the island of Majorca, in 1957. He attended the Escuela de Bellas Artes y Oficios in Palma de Majorca where he learnt the techniques of drawing and modelling and the Escola Superior de Belas Artes de Sant Jordi in Barcelona. At only nineteen years of age, he held his first official personal showing at the Museum of Palma de Majorca at which he offered visitors his reflections on the topic of metamorphosis, a theme of prime importance in Barceló's production. In 1982, he was the only Spanish artist to be invited to Documenta 7 in Kassel thanks to which the doors of international art were opened to him at only twenty-five years of age. Barceló, being a great explorer, went to Africa for the first time in 1988. The Mali landscape, characterised by wide plains, low-pressure areas, full of rock formations and the mirages of the desert, became recurrent topics in his work and he has since divided his time between Paris, Majorca and Mali. Today, he has turned his strength and energies to the terracotta decoration of Saint Peter's Chapel in the Seu cathedral of Palma de Majorca.

Il catalogo, realizzato in occasione della mostra-evento di Lugano, raccoglie una sessantina di dipinti realizzati a partire dal 1982 fino alla produzione più recente di Barceló, uno dei principali rappresentanti del senso estetico spagnolo contemporaneo presentano i tratti principali dell’attività dell’artista maiorchino. Dopo i primi lavori d'ispirazione concettuale basati sulla sperimentazione di materie in decomposizione, agli inizi degli anni '80 egli si lega agli artisti dell'avanguardia che rivendicano il piacere dell'atto pittorico ed esaltano il ritorno alla raffigurazione. Il suo stile è allora diretto e iconoclasta. La consacrazione internazionale arriva con la partecipazione alla rassegna Documenta di Kassel nel 1982. La sua pittura si distingue in questo periodo per un espressionismo personale che ricorre a temi quali nature morte, biblioteche e autoritratti. Dipinge su tele di grande formato e i suoi soggetti sono deliberatamente autobiografici: Barceló si raffigura mentre dipinge, oppure trae ispirazione dal quotidiano (nature morte, ritratti, paesaggi). Questo confronto con i grandi temi della pittura classica è tuttavia carico di negatività: gli ortaggi e la frutta stanno per marcire, gli animali sono talvolta ridotti allo stato di carcasse, teschi e ossa, i ritratti sono torvi, i paesaggi deserti e sperimenta i soggetti con pigmenti e nuove tecniche pittoriche, inserendo nei suoi dipinti materiali organici e inorganici. La sua opera si arricchisce inoltre della fondamentale esperienza dei suoi viaggi: Maiorca, dove è nato, Barcellona, Parigi, New York, Napoli e soprattutto l’Africa, con i suoi colori, il deserto, il vuoto, la luce intensa e le forti ombre, diviene il luogo privilegiato che più si avvicina alla sua poetica artistica. Il particolare percorso artistico di Barceló verrà illustrato attraverso le tematiche che hanno contraddistinto la sua ricerca sull’arco di oltre un ventennio: dagli “Ateliers” ai “Ritratti”, dalle “Nature morte” alle “Crocifissioni” dalle ”Corride” ai “Paesaggi marini” per non citare che le principali.

This catalogue has been produced for the Barceló exhibition in Lugano, and brings together around sixty paintings created by the artist between 1982 and the present. Barceló, from Majorca, is one of the leading figures in contemporary Spanish art and this catalogue highlights some of the distinguishing features of his work. Barceló’s early work was inspired by conceptual art and was based on experimentation with the decomposition of materials. At the beginning of the 1980s he drew close to avant-garde artists who were asserting the pleasure of the pictorial act and promoting a return to figurative work. His style at the time was direct and iconoclastic. His international success came with participation in the Documenta exhibition in Kassel in 1982. His painting was then distinguished by personal expressionism and dealt with themes such as still life, libraries and self-portraits. His works are large and his subjects are first and foremost intentionally autobiographical - Barceló depicts himself as he paints, alluding to the role of the demiurge incarnated as artist – or they are inspired by daily life (still life, portraits, landscapes). However, this thread with the great themes of classical painting is loaded with negativity: vegetables and fruit are in the process of rotting, animals are often reduced to mere carcases, skulls or skeletons, portraits are grim and landscapes bare. Moreover, he experiments with these subjects by using new pictorial techniques and pigments, such as organic and inorganic materials. Experimenting using different artistic techniques enables Barceló to represent and present the reality of the world, captured in its essentiality and truth, free from the superfluous and expressed showing the constant flux of life and death. As such, in the works of this artist the world becomes an interpenetration of solids and voids, material that is produced and that is always changing. In addition, his work is further enriched by much travelling: Majorca, where he was born, Barcelona, Paris, New York, Naples and Africa above all, with its colours, its desert, its emptiness, its intense light and strong shadows: this continent has become his preferred place, the one most closely related to the poetry of his art. Barceló’s artistic journey is explored through the themes that have marked his work over a period of more than twenty years, and these include: “Ateliers”, “Portraits”, “Still life” “Crucifixions” ”Bullfights” and “Sea Landscapes”.
