Catalogue in Italian and German with contributions by Felix Billeter (Hans Purrmann Archive), Simone Soldini, Matteo Bianchi and Eva Zimmermann.
Hans Purrmann was born in Speyer in the Rhineland 1880. His artistic career began to develop in Munich and Berlin among the masters of German Impressionism (Liebermann, Slevogt and Corinth) and the new avant-garde (Kandinsky, Klee and Marc). Then in 1905 came a turning point when he moved to Paris, staying there until 1914. In Paris, Purrmann became familiar with the work of two artists who were to be instrumental in his development: Paul Cézanne and Henri Matisse, of whom he was both a pupil and a friend. After returning to Berlin he settled in Langenargen on Lake Constance. Between 1935 and 1943 he was in Florence, as Director of the German Institute at the Villa Romana. Finally, he spent a lengthy period in Montagnola in the Canton Ticino in the company of his friend Hermann Hesse, a period which lasted from 1944 for over twenty years until his death in1966. Purrmann travelled widely, preferring Italy and France. In the seaside resorts in particular he found suitable subjects for his paintings, and favoured the genres of landscapes, interiors, still life and portraits. Many subjects were produced in several variations, following in the footsteps of Cézanne. A pure colourist, Purrmann is considered one of the greatest German artists from the first half of the 20th century. His sense of harmony, and his chromatic and formal equilibrium, make him an unusual artist in the panorama of German art. A German artist, yet closer to the French style of painting, in addition to his great skill and sophistication in the use of colour, his works reveal a wide-ranging culture, arising from his interest in the history of art and his passion for collecting objects from all eras and countries. His in-depth knowledge of art can be clearly seen in his work as a critic, theoretician and memorialist. Purrmann’s paintings can be found in all the major German museums, some of which have mounted comprehensive retrospectives of his work. By virtue of his great skill as a colourist, he occupies a very special place in the panorama of great German art from the first half of the 20th century. He spent many years at Montagnola in the Canton Ticino, with some of his best work produced here as his creativity blossomed. He also became a great friend of Hermann Hesse. This circumstance explains the joint initiative of the Museo d’arte Mendrisio and the Museo Hermann Hesse Montagnola, in collaboration with the Hans Purrmann Archive in Munich. 60 oils on canvas and 20 watercolours, some of the most significant examples of his work, have been selected for the exhibition at the Museo d’arte Mendrisio, focusing on landscapes and still lifes. The works chosen are representative of the whole varied spectrum of Purrmann’s artistic career, ranging from his early French period when he was painting his first Mediterranean landscapes alongside Matisse at Collioure, up to the later years characterised by the colourful landscapes of Liguria and Ischia. Pride of place has also been given to works from the many years he spent in Ticino (1943-1966).
The Museo Hermann Hesse Montagnola also offers the opportunity to admire some of his landscapes of Ticino side by side with important documents relating to his long stay in Ticino, full of friendships and meetings. Of particular interest are the photographs, drawings and correspondence produced over the years with the great German writer Hermann Hesse. The exhibitions are accompanied by a catalogue in Italian and German, which contains several critical contributions and 90 colour illustrations.
