Auf der Suche:               English translation

Am 27.März 1991 bin ich in Luknov mit dem Flugzeug angekommen um in Kanpur das Haus und das Grab von Guruji zu suchen, der Naqshbandi Sufi Meister "Bhai Sahib" von Irina Tweedie.

In Luknow wollte ich zuvor noch kurz auf die Andra Bank um Geld zu holen. Die Distanz vom Airport zur City ist etwa 1 Km, der Taxifahrer hat es fertig gebracht mich im "Kakao" herumzufahren und mir erst nach einer Stunde Taxifahrt zu sagen "in Luknow haben wir keine Andra Bank" danach hat er mich auf die Busstation gebracht die nach Kanpur führt.
 
Ich habe mit diesem Taxifahrer etwa zwei Stunden verloren. Erst einige Stunden später konnte ich erkennen wie wichtig es war diese zwei Stunden verloren zu haben.

Im Bus nach Kanpur sass ich neben einem Mann mit dem ich ins Gespräch kam. Sein Name ist Kamal. Ich erklährte ihm meine Suche nach dem Haus und dem Grab von Guruji in Kanpur.

Kamal fragte mich darauf:

"Wie willst du ein Haus finden ohne Namen und ohne Adresse von einem Mann ohne Namen der vor 30 Jahren gestorben ist in einer Stadt mit etwa drei Millionen Einwohner?"

Er hat mich eingeladen bei ihm einen Chai zu trinken. Auf der Strasse haben wir seinen "Barber" getroffen und er hat ihm von meiner Suche erzählt. Der Barber antwortete:
"Ich habe einen Kunden, der dort drüben wohnt, und der sich über Gurus auskennt"
Wir haben angeklopft.

Es war das Haus von Guruji.

Die Indienreise die ich 1991 gemacht hatte dauerte 3 Monate.
Ich habe hunderte von Fotos gemacht die alle gut gelungen sind.
Nur im Haus von Guruji hat der Autofokus nicht funktioniert und alle Fotos waren unbrauchbar.
Zu meinem Glück hatte ich auch noch gefilmt. Die Fotos hier sind vom TV-Bildschirm fotografiert und leider miserabler Qualitàt.

(Guruji liebte Fotos nicht,
hat aber nichts gegen Videos gesagt)

A brief search:
on 27th March 1991 I landed in Luknov in order to look for Guruji's house and grave in Kanpur; Guruji was Irina Tweedie's Naqshbandi Sufi Master "Bhai Sahib". I wanted to stop briefly in Luknov to withdraw money at the Andra Bank. It is roughly 1 km from the airport to the city; the taxi driver, however, drove me round and round the city for a whole hour before telling me "there is no Andra Bank in Luknov". After that he drove me to the bus station, where buses left for Kanpur. I had lost about 2 hours with this man. Only several hours later did I appreciate how important it was that I had lost these 2 hours. On the bus to Kanpur I was sitting next to a man and we started talking. His name was Kamal. I told him I was looking for Guruji's house and grave in Kanpur. Kamal asked me:
"How do you think you can find a house without having the name and address of a man whose name you don't know and who died 30 years ago in a city of approximately 3 million inhabitants"?
He then invited me to his house to drink chai. On the street we met his barber and he told him who I was looking for. The barber answered: "I have a customer who lives over there; he's an expert on gurus". We knocked on the door. It was Guruji's house.

In 1991 I undertook a trip to India, which lasted three months. I took hundreds of photographs, all of good quality. Only in the house of Guruji the automatic focus did not work and all the photographs were useless. Luckily I also took a film. The pictures shown here are photographed from the moving film and unfortunately of miserable quality.
(Guruji did not like his picture taken, but did not object to the making of videos.)
