What is EFT in a nutshell?
EFT stands for Emotional Freedom Techniques - a powerful new method
based on the discovery that our limiting beliefs and unresolved
emotional traumas contribute greatly to mental, emotional, and physical
distress. When we fall prey to negative thoughts and emotions, we lose
the capacity for joy and creative expression of our innate potential.
The resulting grief and frustration eventually manifest in the body as
tension, pain and finally illness. Research is now showing convincingly
that EFT is able to rapidly reduce the impact of experiences that have
become the source of distress. As a result, the body is often able to
rebalance itself, thus accelerating the natural healing process.
How does EFT work?
EFT works directly with the body as an energy system. Gary Craig, who
developed Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) in the early 1990s, has
often described his method as a needle-free version of the ancient
Chinese system of acupuncture. It is based on the assumption that
negative emotions go along with a disturbance in the body's energy
field. With EFT, we stimulate specific key 'acupoints' situated along
the body's energy meridians while tuning into a specific problem we wish
to address. This not only removes blockages in the natural flow of chi,
leading to an overall balancing of the body's energies; it often brings
relief from physical symptoms of stress as well as freedom from the
power of negative thoughts and limiting beliefs related to the issue we
addressed.
This framework is not unique to EFT but underlies much of Energy
Psychology - an umbrella term for a range of approaches to psychological
issues by working with the body's energy currents and fields. EFT is the
most well-known in an extended family of meridian therapies such as
Roger Callahan's Thought Field Therapy (TFT). Whereas TFT requires the
use of specific tapping sequences determined by muscle testing and is
administered by trained clinicians only, its cousin EFT is a simplified
method based on the use of a standardized treatment protocol, which
lends itself to being used by practitioners along with their clients as
an effective self help modality.
What EFT does:
EFT is primarily used to address emotional issues but is frequently
helpful in treating physical pain and tension as well. Even longstanding
conditions respond favorably, and it is not unusual that EFT will
help where nothing else has. The method
often works wonders as a cure for what we may call ‘the common upset’;
it can allow us to rapidly clear unresolved emotional trauma, and even a
longstanding phobia such as a fear of snakes may vanish within one
session of focused tapping. Even beginning practitioners can expect a 50
to 60% success rate. More complex issues tend to require sustained
effort and the intervention of a skilled therapist. But even in such
cases, tapping homework done between sessions can greatly speed up
treatment. More recently, EFT master practitioners have come forward to
further develop the method’s range of creative applications. Instead of
focusing on problem areas only, EFT is now increasingly used to enhance
performance and overcome blocks to achieving important life goals.
