The year was 1990 and the Galleria Gottardo had little more than a year before begun its exhibition policy, the intention of which was to show what mankind had managed to produce in whatever part of the world it had worked. In the year in question the occasion was offered by a private collection of Japanese popular art objects. Artists and also craftsmen who in the main were anonymous had been the artificers of those admirable mingei objects. Today, and by way of completing the series of exhibitions for the tenth year of its activity, the Galleria Gottardo has decided to return to Japanese popular or folk art by proposing the ceramics by Shimaoka Tatsuzo, acknowledged as being one of the worlds greatest potters. Vases, plates, bottles, cups and other stupendous objects form part of one of the most important collections of its kind. In almost forty years the collector did not merely limit himself to acquiring the most precious pieces but has also "woven" a great friendship with the artist, in this way remaining involved - and becoming an "accomplice" - in the pleasure of exhaustively knowing this art which, thanks to the artists manual skill and profound familiarity with the materials and matters he uses, offers us truly amazing results. For the realization of this exhibition and the catalogue that accompanies it we owe our thanks to many. We therefore wish to mention Yanagi Sori, President of the Japan Folk Museum of Tokyo whom we gratefully thank for his kind introduetory message. Our appreciation also goes to Aoki Hiroshi, chief keeper of the Tochigi Prefectural Museum of Fine Arts who has authorized us to publish the technical files regarding the artist. Our thanks are also addressed to Ildegarda Scheidegger who has written the historical-artistic introduction treating the art of mingei ceramics, to Elisabetta Hugentobler and Adriano Antonini for the kind cooperation. We finally offer our thanks to Adolf Zihler, the collector who has personally followed this work of ours and who now parts from his precious pieces - albeit for a short period of time - in order to offer them on exhibition for the first time in our gallery.
